How did you become a DJ?
I started DJing in a small club in my home town in the Netherlands. I had a residency for 4 nights a week playing 6hour sets!
What made you want to be a DJ?
I wanted to share my musical taste with other people.
What was your inspiration for the ISOS V? What made you choose LA?
In the beginning of this year I stayed in LA for a few months to produce new music. During that period I also compiled and mixed the new ISOS 5 CD so I got my inspiration from my stay in LA.
Why did you pick L.A. as the setting for your 5th ISOS?
LA for me was very inspirational, I met so many people who helped me with finding new tracks and musicians.
Do you have anyone from the L.A. area that particularly influenced you?
I am not gonna namedrop here ☺, it was more the vibe which I had during my stay.
I heard the party in Miami during the WMC for the Launch was something special? Any comments?
It was really special for me as I played the whole night and I did that two nights in a row. Both nights had the unique In Search Of Sunrise vibe so it was definitely one of the highlights of the first few months of 2006.
You've done so much .. Who and what is left? Where are you heading and what left do you want to accomplish in and out of the DJ booth...
I still have a lot of goals which I want to achieve. One of them was the fact that I wanted to do something for a big charity organisation and therefore I have become the official ambassador for Dance4Life. Dance4Life is company which creates awareness among young people in the world for the AIDS/HIV problems.
What makes the perfect song?
When it does something with you emotionally, either happy or sad.
I've been looking at your schedule and your set for Jakarta, Rotterdam, London, Montreal, NY, LA, Miami... What's the best place to party right now?
There are so many great partyplaces in the world! Every country and city has it’s unique feeling that makes it special to party!
I read somewhere that you plan your sets down to a 100 records is that true?
I do not plan my sets upfront but I do know the first few tracks that I’m going to play. I look at the reactions on those tracks and I will take it from there. Every track which I take along on tour is a potential track to play out and I can assure you that I carry a lot more than 100 tracks with me ☺
How is DJ'ing different since you were breaking out 10 years ago or so...
People expect something different from my sets now than back in the days. In a lot of countries where I perform the people are not that familiar yet with dance music. They only know me from my hits which I produced over the last few years and want to hear them. If I play in Europe for instance, the people expect me to surprise them and they don’t want to hear the hits.
How has the Digital age made DJ'ing different?
I can receive tracks everywhere in the world now on the same day that they role out of the studio, all because of the modern techniques!
Any new toys you recommend to the DJ's out there?
The new pioneer djm 800 mixer! amazing!
What's & Who is hot in 2006?
Mark Norman is the new hot producer from holland
What artists are you working with in the studio or producing?
Maxi jazz from faithless
Which do you enjoy most DJ'ing, Producing new artists or remixing?
The combination of all above makes it perfect and diverse
Any ideas for ISOS 6?
Plenty!!!
